Youth Group Blog

Hey everybody… Vicki Kilmer here… thanks for tuning into the Your Group blog.  I’ll be keeping you updated on what’s happening in the Legacy Youth Group.  Keep your eyes pealed.

THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!

Legacy youth group would like to thank all of you who made the Valentine Banquet a huge success. God bless each and every one of you. We had a net profit of close to $1100.00 Praise the Lord.

God has blessed our youth group with new Interlinc material that we started using the first of March. The lessons are very powerful and practical for youth and the challenges that they face today.

We have Acquire the Fire that we will be attending in May 4th, 5th, and 6th. The conference is at the Denver Coliseum, Denver CO. The theme this year is NORMAL IS NOT ENOUGH. Acquire the Fire is a National Christian youth conference that takes place in 32 major cities throughout the United States and Canada. Over the last 20 years this Christian youth conference has provoked over 2.7 million young people to passionately pursue Jesus Christ. Hundreds of youth groups come to this 27-hour Christian youth conference annually to take part in the intense worship, spiritually charged drama, and life changing messages. Aquire the Fire 2012

What Jesus did on the cross wasn’t normal…
Neither are His followers!

The normal life says, “take the path of least resistance… it’s easier that way.” But the truth is that the path of least resistance makes crooked rivers and crooked men… Normal’s Not Enough!

Today’s “Normal” culture creates a suffocating vacuum; a lifestyle of powerlessness, paralyzing its victims with apathy and boredom. People want their life to be a constant rush, but they can’t find a way to stay in that zone. After playing every level of every video game known to man, the zombie gamer realizes he is bored and that a computer manufactured the high. After every TV show and movie the media addict realizes he has been watching other people live life and not living his own. Many others have attempted to break out of the clutches of the “normal” life by partying, getting involved in sports, music, or fashion but again only to realize they are empty inside wondering what to try next. None of these “normal” distractions will ever produce the rush we want… because Normal’s Not Enough!

You were made for so much more than merely NORMAL.

The World says that normal is just getting by in the shallow stagnated waters of the SELF-centered life… but Normal’s Not Enough!

Much of today’s popular “shallow Christianized entertainment” tastes sweet but lasts only for a moment. A diet consisting only of this kind of “normal” is making this generation think they have experienced the real thing. These “cotton candy Christians” dissolve in water and melt at the first sign of fire, and are left empty thinking normal Christianity is just a game. Normal’s Not Enough!

What Jesus did on the cross wasn’t normal… neither is what He calls His followers to. It is anything but normal! He is inviting us to remove ourselves from the mundane rituals that appear fun for a moment, but ultimately kill our dreams and our drive. He spoke of a Kingdom that is coming, a kingdom within us that HE wants to build. Following in His footsteps is the beginning of a torrent of spiritual life, freedom from sin and the trance of boredom this world spins for us. This generation of youth is NOT looking for a new definition of Christianity… rather a NEW demonstration of Christianity. Because Normal’s Not Enough!

This year at Acquire The Fire, we will discover together just how shockingly un-normal we were meant to be. The story of Jesus will leap to life before your eyes as if you had never heard it before. You will see that what He did is so much bigger than any flannel board in Sunday School could ever describe! You will discover some of the behind-the-scenes mysteries whispered throughout the Bible that led to the greatest rescue ever conceived. You will witness ultimate evil versus the ultimate good, while learning the sobering reason for this battle of all the ages. You will see with incredible clarity the reason for His astonishing sacrifice. His sacrifice compels us to a lifestyle that is decidedly NOT NORMAL. Your understanding of reality will change as you see the truth behind the curtain, that we are still living in the middle of a war torn universe. You will leave knowing that you’ll never live a “normal” life again because of the change that happened inside you. Normal will never be Enough again.

This is our hallowed moment, our clarion call for action. If we will unshackle ourselves from the things of this world and give ourselves wholly for 27 hours to God… He will grip this generation with cause and a vision that will drive back the dark angel of complacency and destruction… the world has never been moved by… the mildly motivated. The time for fresh fire is now. Normal’s Not Enough!

Youth Ministry is a Battle!

This profession, or calling, isn’t for the faint of heart. Although some people are envious of us “Games and pizza every night, Sign me up!” those perceptions are usually far from accurate. Few of us youth leaders coast through life playing Xbox 360 and eating pizza. Youth ministry is a spiritual battlefield for the hearts and minds of God’s children. So much is at stake. Our war isn’t with young people who make poor decisions or with parents who refuse to get involved; it’s with the Enemy himself. 1 Peter 5:8 says “Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.” We will lose battles and be shaken to the core, but we will not give up and we will fight for the souls of our youth. We want to share with you the names of our youth who attend Wednesday nights. We feel privileged that these youth come to our youth group. We as leaders are asking you to pray for these kids. That for God to move in their hearts and in their family lives. Pray for them to have a desire to come on Sunday mornings. We are truly in a battle for their lives! 1.) Daniel Hufford-6th grade, 2.) Youth News for October

Legacy Youth Group is being busy these days! We have several things planned for the youth group, but most of all we see God moving in the hearts of young people. 1 Timothy 4:12 reads” Let no man despise the youth and look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in life, in love, in faith and in purity.

Our prayer for the youth is for them to have a closer relationship with Jesus and set the example before their friends and family, and to not be ashamed of being a Christian before their peers.

Aug. 27th we took the youth to “Rock the Range” in Denver. What an amazing time we experienced. Franklin Graham spoke 3 different times during the event. Hundreds of people gave their hearts and lives to our Lord Jesus! We experienced the move of God in the midst of our young people. God is truly an “Awesome God”.

In the next 6 weeks we will be fundraising for our Awaken Conference for the girls in Colorado Springs. We will be selling cards and having bake sales. We would appreciate your support financially and prayerfully.

Change! Change! Change!

Legacy Youth Group is going through some changes right now. We actually started implemented changes within the youth group back in Jan. of this year. Before we share with you some changes that have taken place and that are taken place, Legacy Youth Group want to acknowledge and gratefully thank Tim and Cindy Smith for their 4-5 years of service to Legacy Youth Group. They have given numerous hours of work and dedication to our youth group and provided spiritual training and growth to and for our youth group. Words cannot express how much we love and appreciate their devotion to our youth group and to us. We know that they were doing this because God called them to be the leaders for this period of time for our youth group and we thank to them so much. We also know that God is calling them to leave and go forward with him to do his will and his work so that God will be glorified. Like Tim shared with the youth group he and Cindy are not leaving us or the church they are being led in a different direction. They will be greatly missed by all of us.

Now back to changes that have taken places! In January, we leaders felt led of God to implement changes within the youth group and instill godly changes in the kids. As we prayed and started compiling these changes we felt led to ask a younger persons advice so we called upon Kyle Clark to help us come up with these changes. I won’t go through the list of changes we wanted to implement but I will give you a few examples. We felt the youth needed to be taught to respect and show honor to each other. We felt the youth needed to be taught to respect the leaders and those in authority over them. We felt the youth needed to be taught to respect Gods property which is the Youth House where we meet. Kyle was very gracious to help us leaders implement these changes to the kids, but he also told us leaders “be prepared for opposition” from the kids. Nobody likes change, not even young people. When the youth were presented with the changes that need to take place within the youth group and within themselves, all I can say is they were not happy campers. We shared with them that this would change them into the young men and ladies of God, and that God would want them to be. Needless to say, Kyle left and went to IHOP (not the pancake place) and left us leaders with the challenge to pray for God to change our hearts towards the kids and for us to pray daily for the kids. We started praying every day for every youth in our youth group and for each other. I will tell you we had many trials that came against our youth group but we continued to pray and pray we did. We gradually started to see changes take place and before we knew it the kids went from having the head knowledge to having the heart knowledge of what God was wanting from them. Today all the changes that we put before them at the first of the year is habit to them now. God has brought all of us a long way from the beginning of the year. The respect that the kids have for each other and for the leaders and for the youth house has come from God changing them and changing us the leaders. God has so blessed our youth group in so many ways!

Another change we always welcome is having Kyle Clark home from IHOP (not the pancake place). He has been with our youth group for a month now. He has been teaching us new praise and worship songs, which we have so richly enjoyed. He has brought a new freshness to scriptures and his lessons have been so encouraging to all of us. We have learned a lot from Kyle and we are always so blessed when he comes back to our youth group. Here again change has taken place within our hearts. God brought Kyle back to us for a short period of time for refreshing and renewing our spirits. Thank you so much Kyle. We love you so much! We are so amazed at how Kyle is allowing God to use him and grow him in many areas and then come back and share with us.

In closing this is change for me since this is my first article that I have ever written for the Temple Trumpet. I am thankful for all the changes God has brought into my life and Legacy Youth Group in the last seven months. We as leaders share with the youth, Legacy Youth Group is not our youth group but it belongs to them but most important it belongs to God. As long as we put God first he will bless our youth group. One thing we also share with the youth is even though as people we will go through changes in our life. Some we might like and some we might not like but one thing is for certain God never changes. The bible says in Malachi 3:6 “For I am the Lord, I change not. Praise God he never changes!!”

Lastly we have new leadership positions in Legacy Youth Group and I want to acknowledge them now. Ron McCarty Assistant Youth Director, and Roxanne McCarty Youth Leader.

In Christ Service,
Vickie Kilmer
Youth Director

Rock the Range

rtr

Legacy Youth Group is planning a trip to Denver for Franklin Graham and “Rock The Range”. This is a new event for Denver and the itinerary is still being set. There will be plenty of kid friendly activities planned and performances by Lecrae, The Afters and the Almost. The message that evening will be by none other than Franklin Graham. Check out the details at rocktherange.org

Nail Jell-O to a tree

We have a plaque that hangs in our kitchen. It is words of wisdom given to Cindy and me by my mother. The plaque reads “Raising a teenager is like nailing Jell-O to a tree. “

This is a reminder that the teenage years are not easy for kids or parents. Nor is it easy for those who work with teenagers. The past three months have been quite a challenging time for all of us who work with our youth group. New problems and challenges have come up that we have never faced before. Click to Continue »

Songs are a funny thing

Songs are a funny thing. They move us in ways that words or pictures cannot. They can instantly transport our feelings to another place or time. Sometimes we sing songs but were not sure of the meaning of the words. Take for instance the old time Christian Hymn
“Bringing in the sheaves,
Bringing in the sheaves,
We will come rejoicing,
Bringing in the sheaves.”
